Music Collections: Seriously Fun Little Orchestra, Pink Martini

Who are you covering today?

Pink Martini, a seriously fun internationally acclaimed live band.

What’s the deal?

Pink Martini has found international success shortly after it was formed back in 1994 with its first single Sympathique when it became an overnight sensation in France. Being a “little orchestra”that has musicians from all over the world, it’s not surprising that the group draws inspiration from multi-cultural and an impressive range of genres, ranging from Latin beats and contemporary jazz to classical pop and international elements. With over 9 albums under their belt, numerous collaborations with the likes of The Von Trapps and Saori Yuki and having been active for 20 years and counting in the music scene, there are no signs of stopping Pink Martini from continuing to deliver deliciously wonderful music to the world’s stage.

What’s the music like?

Mainly a mix of original compositions, covers, and re-imagined classic song covers in Latin, Swing, ballad and Foxtrot styles, you can expect that the band’s music originates from many areas of familiar sounds to produce enthusiastic listening. With each member of the band being an experienced musician with roots from around the world, they bring rich material that enhance their pieces to levels that are accessible. Pink Martini’s founder, Thomas Lauderdale, explained the concept of the band as “creating safe spaces for people to blossom [...] and be inspired”.  Expect to hear classy yet recognizable tracks with a sudden desire to share their music with friends and family.

Why should I add this to my collection?

The beauty of Pink Martini’s music is that it’s highly approachable for anybody who is searching for easy listening. Elegant, seriously cheeky, sometimes hilarious and a beautiful fountain of music for your ears with massive bubbles of enthusiasm, many of Pink Martini’s songs are bound to bring a smile to your face while sipping that glass of wine.
